Social Learning Theory

Psychology is a branch of science that deals with the study of human behavior. Through the years, many psychologists conducted their own studies and research on how human behaves the way they do. One of these psychologists is Albert Bandura.

Albert Bandura is a very popular persona in the field of psychology. He is famous for his articles, books, and contribution to the theory of social learning. As a matter of fact, he had received several awards and honors for his exemplary performance as a psychologist.

Social learning theory derived from the behavioral approach to personality. Many social learning theorists including Bandura believe that learning is the most important factor in personality development and that interactions with other people offer the most important experiences. Bandura conducted his own study and proved just how reliable and effective this theory is.

The Social Learning Theory of Bandura
As one of the firm believers of the theory, Bandura has developed a concept which he calls self-efficacy, which consists of people’s belief in their ability to succeed in the tasks they set out to accomplish. Bandura also said that much social learning takes place through observation. According to him, people see what other people do and what happens as a result, and they learn new responses by watching this process takes place.

Bandura and His Study of the Bobo Doll
Bandura used the Bobo doll in his classic series of experiments that distinguished between the role of observation in learning a response and the role of reinforcement in determining whether the child performed it.

This study emphasized the importance of observing and modeling the behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions of other people. Bandura pointed out that there are some steps involved in the modeling process. These steps are attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation.

Attention
Based on the theory, if you want to learn something you have to pay attention. Paying attention can be very difficult sometime especially if there are factors that prevent you from doing so. In addition, the kind of model you look up to also plays an important role in paying attention.

Retention
After paying attention, you must remember or recall whatever you have learned, heard, seen or experienced. You must have that mental picture of the model in your mind so you can easily recall what you have learned from it.

Reproduction
Imitation plays a vital role in social learning. You must learn to apply what you have observed and learned from the model. You tend to visualize yourself actually doing the same thing as the model did. You imitate the action that you have paid attention to before.

Motivation
None of this will be possible if you lack the drive or motivation to imitate the model. Motivation should be positive like in the form of reinforcements or rewards. You have to avoid punishment or negative motivation as much as possible.

The social learning theory of Bandura is indeed very useful since you can apply it to your daily life. This theory is also very helpful in understanding aggression and in dealing with psychological disorders. Bandura’s study of social learning theory based on modeling is truly a great contribution in psychology.
