What is Personal Development?
What is personal development? The concept might seem tacky to you, thinking it’s about self-proclaimed gurus selling CD sets of e-books on how to become a millionaire, how to be happier, or how to lose weight in five days. Personal development basically means improving yourself. It is something that celebrities, athletes, businessmen, or artists do to achieve the best person they can. Personal development refers to our conscious self-transcendence and self-improvement. It is the aspiration to realize our higher self through improving a broad range of areas, such as our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects.
Defining What is Personal Development involves setting of goals and benchmarks, strategies or methods for reaching our goals, stages that define milestones, and assessment and measurement of progress.
Perhaps we don’t want some programs that promise to unlock a millionaire giant within, or perhaps the Maharishi’s Weight Loss Hypnosis Program that promises we could burn your extra fat within 10 days. Maybe we don’t like the CDs that promise to help us become a millionaire in a short period of time. Well, while we can get useful information from those things, we don’t necessarily have to be enrolled in personality development programs or read all those materials to achieve our ideal self. Here are some useful tips for the broad concept of personal development:
Have a clear vision of what you want in life. Ask yourself these questions: What role do I want?; What type of organization or industry I want to work for; What is my purpose in life?; What is the impact I want to leave behind at the end of my chosen career? What I want to do, not what I need to do, is the key element to achieve a more balanced personal development. For instance, I cannot be happy with a job related to sales because what I want is to have a job related to designing. Taking a job that’s not what we want does not only affect our financial aspect but also our emotional and mental aspects.
Assessment of our skills, knowledge and personal qualities and assessment of our progress are also necessary. To assess our skills, we need to identify the skills we currently have and the skills we need to develop or give more attention. Assessing our knowledge especially in the fields of our interest can move us forward in our career path.
Then, assess the qualities that we have. This aspect of ourselves is actually considered the most important attribute. Anyone who has reached a leadership role would agree that no matter how knowledgeable we are if we don’t have poor personal attributes, poor attitude, poor manners; it is difficult for us to go to where we want to go. Knowing where we stand in this aspect is the first step to improving it.
The assessment of our qualities, skills and knowledge can help us create a personal development plan. Be specific about what results you are seeking, what methods to use to achieve the results, and by when will you achieve them? By using the results in your assessment, create a detailed plan to develop the aspects that need more attention and development.
